چکیده

Bekenstein’s model of a scalar field, φ, that affects the electromagnetic permeability (usually identified with “changing α”) predicts tiny variations of the effective fine structure constant up to very high red-shifts, |α(z = 3.5)/α0− 1| < 10, when the constraints from Eötvös-Dicke-Braginsky types of experiments are imposed. We generalize this model by allowing additional couplings of φ to both a dark matter candidate and to the cosmological constant. We show that in a supersymmetric generalization of Bekenstein’s model, the coupling to the LSP, which is assumed to contribute significantly to the dark matter density, can be up to six orders of magnitude stronger than the coupling to the baryon energy density. This allows one to evade the present limits on the non-universality of the gravitational attraction due to φ-exchange and at the same time accommodate the effective shift in α at the level of α(z = 3.5)/α0 − 1 ∼ 10, reported recently from observations of quasar absorption spectra.

Local and Global Variations of The Fine Structure Constant

Using the BSBM varying-alpha theory, with dark matter dominated by magnetic energy, and the spherical collapse model for cosmological structure formation, we have studied the effects of the dark-energy equation of state and the coupling of alpha to the matter fields on the space and time evolution of alpha. We have compared its evolution inside virialised overdensities with that in the cosmolog...

Variation of the fine structure constant in QSO spectra from coherent dark matter oscillations

We consider the problem of the evolution of the fine structure coefficient α under the assumption that the scalar field coupling to the Maxwell term satisfies the condition mt ≫ 1 for coherent dark matter oscillations. In this case we find that the coupling scale f in the leading order coupling −(φ/4f)FμνF μν affects the cosmological evolution of α according to ln(α/α0) ∝ ξ(mPl/f)× ln(tanh(t/2τ...

Interacting Dark Matter and Dark Energy

We discuss models for the cosmological dark sector in which the energy density of a scalar field approximates Einstein’s cosmological constant and the scalar field value determines the dark matter particle mass by a Yukawa coupling. A model with one dark matter family can be adjusted so the observational constraints on the cosmological parameters are close to but different from what is predicte...

Cosmological Evolution of the Higgs Boson’s Vacuum Expectation Value

We point out that the expansion of the universe leads to a cosmological time evolution of the vacuum expectation of the Higgs boson. Within the standard model of particle physics, the cosmological time evolution of the vacuum expectation of the Higgs leads to a cosmological time evolution of the masses of the fermions and of the electroweak gauge bosons while the scale of Quantum Chromodynamics...

Sensitivity of the Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropy to Initial Conditions in Quintessence Cosmology

We analyze the evolution of energy density fluctuations in cosmological scenarios with a mixture of cold dark matter and quintessence, in which the quintessence field is modeled by a constant equation of state. We obtain analytic expressions for the time evolution of the quintessence perturbations in models with light fields. The fluctuations behave analogously to a driven harmonic oscillator, ...
